McMaster Children’s Hospital is home to specialized pediatric care for children and youth in south-central Ontario, and is the second largest provider of inpatient pediatric services in Ontario. The hospital is also home to a dedicated pediatric emergency department, more than 40 outpatient clinics, the province’s largest neonatal intensive care unit including supportive maternal care, the largest single-site inpatient pediatric mental health program in Canada, and the only pediatric trauma centre in the region. Specialized outpatient services are provided at Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre, as part of McMaster Children’s Hospital. At its shared home with the Hospital, McMaster University Medical Centre delivers a wide range of women’s reproductive health services, including high-risk obstetrics and pre-natal screening.
For residents of Waterloo Region, McMaster Children’s Hospital plays an important role as it is home to the highest level of specialized pediatric health care services, many of which cannot be found elsewhere in the region. This hospital provides life-saving and life-altering care for patients and families in Waterloo Region, even though it is located in Hamilton. While local hospitals play an important role in providing essential health care in the region, for highly specialized care they will work in collaboration with the specialists at McMaster Children’s Hospital.
